The primary purpose of the Update 2004 program hosted by the SynCure Cancer Research Foundation, with Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare as a lead sponsor, was to provide a substantive educational program on advancements in cancer research and treatment for cancer patients, their friends and family, the health care/support community, and the general public. By all accounts, the symposium was a tremendous success. There were 196 registrants and an audience of approximately 131.

Philip M. Arlen, M.D.

Dr. Arlen received his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. Following completion of his residency in Internal Medicine, he received his training in Hematology/Oncology at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Arlen is currently a Senior Clinical/Scientific Investigator in the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and Biology, Center for Cancer Research, NCI, and is the Co-Director of the Clinical Trials Group. Dr. Arlen is also a member of the senior medical staff at both the NCI Clinical Center and the National Naval Medical Center. He is both Principal and Co-Investigator on numerous clinical trials in prostate cancer, in addition to trials involving immunotherapy and other molecular target initiatives.
Tim W. Bolek, M.D.

Dr. Bolek received his M.D. degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Albuquerque, New Mexico and interned at the Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies, Michigan State University, Kalamazoo, MI. He then did his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. This was followed by appointments as an Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Florida for one year and as an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY for two years. He has been with Radiation Oncology Associates since 1999 and has published several research papers on the use of radiation to treat various forms of cancer.
Tim A. Broeseker, M.D.

Dr. Broeseker received his M.D. degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine, followed by an internship and residency at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. He then returned to the University of Florida where he completed a three-year fellowship in Hematology/Oncology. He has been with Hematology-Oncology Associates in Tallahassee since 1988. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hematology. Dr. Broeseker is a member of several professional societies, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
George P. Kim, M.D.

Dr. Kim received his M.D. degree from the University of Vermont, followed by 3 years of training in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and 5 years of Medical Oncology study at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. In 2002, he joined the Mayo Clinic and Medical School in Jacksonville FL, where he is affiliated with the Division of Medical Oncology, is an Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology, and is Chief of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Section. His research interests are in gastrointestinal malignancies and he has taken part in numerous clinical trials of new cancer therapies.
Maribel U. Lockwood, M.D.

Dr. Lockwood was born in the Republic of Panama and graduated from the University of Panama School of Medicine. She completed a residency in Panama and one in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Florida Urban Campus in Jacksonville, Florida; she subsequently completed a fellowship in Women's Imaging. Dr. Lockwood also completed a research fellowship in Abdominal Imaging at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. She has co-authored scientific papers that have been published in Radiographics and The Radiologist medical journals, and has received awards from the Radiological Society of North America. Dr. Lockwood joined Radiology Associates in 2000 and her special interest is in women's imaging.
Adam I. Riker, M.D.

Dr. Riker received both his B.S. degree (Biology) and M.D. degree from the University of South Florida, followed by 8 years of surgical training at Loyola University in Chicago and the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. He then served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Loyola before joining Moffitt in 2003. As an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, he is affiliated with the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology, the Cutaneous Oncology Program, the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program, and the Experimental Therapeutics Program. He has conducted research on immunotherapies for melanoma and has published 28 research papers in distinguished research journals.
Hardeep Singh, M.D.

Dr. Singh began his medical career at the Armed Forces Medical College in his native India. Upon graduation, he interned and completed residency at New Delhi hospitals before moving to the United States to further his training. He interned at the University of Health Sciences at the Chicago Medical School, completed an internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the State University of New York in Brooklyn. Before joining the Digestive Disease Clinic, Dr. Singh was the staff gastroenterologist at the Scott County Hospital in Oneida, Tennessee and at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
