The primary purpose of the Update 2004 program jointly hosted by the SynCure Cancer Research Foundation and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center was to provide a substantive educational program on advancements in cancer research and treatment for cancer patients, their friends and family, the health care/support community, and the general public. By all accounts, the symposium was a tremendous success. There were 237 registrants and an audience of approximately 150.

Leonard J. Appleman, M.D.

Dr. Appleman received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from New York University in 1995. He completed medical residency at the Beth Israel Hospital (Boston) in 1998. In 2001 he completed a fellowship in Oncology/Hematology at the Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare program in Boston. His clinical interests are Phase I trials and renal cell carcinoma, while his research interests include cell cycle regulation and development of phamacodynamic assays.
J. Carl Barrett, Ph.D.
Director, Center for Cancer Research

Dr. Barrett is the Director of the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) of the National Cancer Institute. The CCR is the largest basic and clinical cancer research facility in the world with approximately 3,500 employees. In addition to leading this cancer research organization, Dr. Barrett is a prolific researcher himself with over 480 scientific publications spanning his 30-year career. Prior to joining the NCI, he was with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina for 23 years. He received a B.S degree in Chemistry from William and Mary and a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University.
Richard Lee, M.D.

Dr. Lee graduated with honors from Cornell University in Chemistry, and he then went on to medical school at Mount Sinai/New York University School of Medicine in 1995. He remained at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York for both his internship in surgery and his urologic training. He has experience in both adult and pediatric urology including the most up to date oncologic care. Dr. Lee was trained in advanced laparoscopic techniques and endoscopic procedures and is certified by the American Board of Urology. He is fluent in Spanish and Chinese.
Jill Morrison, M.D.

Hematologist/ Oncologist Jill S. Morrison, M.D., earned her M.D. at Boston University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Mount Sinai Hospital. At New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Morrison was a College Protocol Fellow, a James Dublin Fellow, a Clinical Fellow and Chief Fellow. She has been a hematologist/oncologist at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center since 1997 with a special interest in clinical trials.
Jedd Wolchok, M.D., Ph.D.
Assistant Attending Physician, Clinical Immunology Service
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Dr. Wolchok is a member of the faculty of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center with expertise in the treatment of metastatic melanoma. His specific research interest is novel immunologic therapies and he has been involved in the development of the DNA vaccine program at every level, from pre-clinical studies in mouse models through clinical trials. Dr. Wolchok has authored numerous articles concerning DNA vaccines and clinical care of melanoma, and he co-authored two chapters in the definitive textbook, Cutaneous Melanoma. Dr. Wolchok received his advanced education at New York University where he earned an M.D. as well as a Ph.D. in microbiology.
Mei Zhang, M.D. Physician Englewood Hospital & Medical Center Englewood, NJ
Radiation Oncologist Mei Zhang, M.D. earned her M.D. at Shanghai Second Medical University, Shanghai China. She completed a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha Nebraska, and interned in Internal Medicine at MCP-Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia, where she also completed her residency in Radiation Oncology. Dr. Zhang is involved in ongoing research to study different radiotherapy techniques for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Dr. Zhang has treated numerous patients at Englewood Hospital for a variety of illness and is particularly interested in the field of breast cancer.
